According to Nicole Liu, friendship is a kind of positive energy. Likened to a beacon, it will light up your forward path, lead you and help you become strong when you are unsure which way to go. According to Nicole Liu, friendship is a kind of positive energy. Likened to a beacon, it will light up your forward path, lead you and help you become strong when you are unsure which way to go. Anna Bao said that, as friends, we should open our hearts to help, care and understand each other. Ella Fan also elaborated that true friends will treat each other sincerely and try their utmost to give a helping hand no matter what the circumstances. Nikki Street expounded her understanding of friendship, “Friendship means being able to phone someone at 4 o’clock in the morning and they will drop anything to come and help you.” Another of our  teachers, Joanne Parrish, said, “Friendship is not one big thing, it is a million little things. It does not matter how far away a true friend is, they are only a heartbeat away. Time does not matter to friendship. True friends can just pick up where they left off.”

I also talked to EY4 pupils and listened to their thoughts on friendship. They told me that friendship means always striving to be good friends. Our pupils have made good friends that they have known for a long time, with  friendships that were made together in Hiba Nursery. From their perspective, good friends are people they care for and would like to play with every day. These responses from colleagues and pupils have given me plenty to think about and be grateful for. To me, friendship is a kind of emotion that we cannot do without in our daily lives. If we compare it to the blazing sun, then its warmth will collect in our hearts and surround us all the time. It is not easy for strangers to meet in this world, let alone to become true colleagues, friends and even closer. Thus, we should feel content with friendships that we currently have and always treasure them.

100 Days of Friendship is an annual event that we hold to celebrate the importance of the friendships we make. On February 18, we held  a ‘new friends’ activity. EY2 pupils guided EY1 pupils to explore their own classrooms and played with them. They tried their best to care for their younger peers and helped them to get familiar with the learning and playing environment in EY2. Likewise, EY4 pupils chose to tell stories for EY3 who made thank you cards for their elder sisters and brothers in return. EY3 and EY4 pupils also enjoyed desserts together in the outside area, bursting into laughter and joyfulness from time to time, as they chatted away. They had a photo taken with their friends by holding the big photo frame. The photo represented their special bond whilst also recording this special moment. To round off the event, pupils and teachers were encouraged to wear any clothes linked with the idea of friendship or the number 100, giving them a chance to show their imagination and creativity.

Our two music teachers organised a group singing activity before collection time. Pupils from EY1 to EY4, along with their teachers, gathered together and sang many songs that they are familiar with, such as Finding My Friends, If You Are Happy, The Rainbow Song and The Wheels on The Bus. The beautiful singing of pupils brought the activity to its conclusion. I truly believe that pupils and teachers alike all gained a deeper understanding of the nature of friendship through this event. We hope that this year’s 100 days of friendship is just the start of many important and long-lasting relationships within the Hiba Academy Shanghai community.
